Comparison between ninth/tenth and eleventh emissions
Sizes, colors and substrates
Based on the studies and analysis carried out, the characteristics of the new family of banknotes approved by the Governing Board of the Bank of Mexico are as follows:
The new eleventh emission comprises 5 denominations: 50, 100, 200, 500 and 1000 pesos. A sixth denomination of 2000 pesos will only be issued if it is considered that this banknote is required to meet the needs of users. In the case of the 20 pesos denomination, it will gradually cease to circulate as a banknote and will be replaced by coin, this as a result of various technical and cost-benefit studies that have been carried out. Notwithstanding the foregoing, on September 24, 2021, a 20 pesos banknote was issued to commemorate the Bicentennial of the Consummation of National Independence but the Director of Issuance of the Bank of Mexico confirmed that this commemorative note will be the last to be manufactured in this denomination. The discontinuation of the banknote means that that denomination will be covered in the future only with coins.
Similar, as far as possible, to those of the previous families, but improving the differences in color between the denominations to prevent them from being confused with each other.
The distribution of the current family is maintained, that is, two denominations (50 and 100 pesos) in polymer and the others in cotton substrate. Likewise, it was issued in polymer the 20 pesos banknote Commemorating the Bicentennial of the Consummation of National Independence.
